Comments & Quotes

This song was first performed live at the Smashbox (Susan Holmes Swimwear 2004 Show) in Culver City, CA on October 30, 2003.

Matt Sorum reported that this song was one that would be included on the album.Slash: "We re-recorded one of the songs, 'You Got No Right' with my live head, which I have never recorded with before. It's the Slash model [Signature] Marshall." (Total Guitar, April 2004)

Duff:"'You Got No Right' was one bass piece" (Total Guitar Bass Guitar, April 2004)

Slash:"the tune 'You Got No Right' is played on a Takamine [it's actually a Taylor cutaway, says guitar tech Adam Day] recorded via microphone and pickup. Just to make it sound more electric. That was the only song I wrote on acoustic." (Total Guitar, April 2004)

Slash: "There's an interesting chord change on the song 'You Got No Right', and it sounded really simplistic but really interesting when I first wrote it. Then we gave it to Scott to play with - and he wrote this amazing vocal for it. I wouldn't have come up with anything like that." (Total Guitar, April 2004)

Duff: "There is a bridge in You Got No Right where I went for a Paul McCartney type of deal." (Total Guitar's Bass Guitar, April 2004)

Matt: "And then we did the one track that’s called ‘You Got No Right,’ which is like a mid-tempo ballad that was recorded in more of a ‘70s room." (Drum Magazine, April 2004)

Lyrics

You Got No Right

I fell through the ice
She won't be coming back too soon
It never wins to lie
She said you'll never have no rights

I've took it farther on the outside
I've took it nearly to the brink
And if you've seen me on the outside
You would have barely seen me breathe

Funny right here I find myself
Inside a paper cup
Without a warning or a reason it's a treason
With no answer

You got no right
To keep me waiting here
You got no right
To keep the pain in here
That holds the crown

And if I fall apart on the outside (You really don't believe me)
And if I take it to the brink
And if I fall apart on the outside / (You really don't believe me)
You would have barely seen me breathe

And if I meet you out tonight
Will you be loving me forever
It's always over after the night
It's always colder after the night
I broke through the ice
She won't be coming back again
It's been a year and a night
